The whole world is made of blocks, which you break through different tools, like shovels, pickaxes and break the blocks. You use shovels for dirt, and your 'pick' or pickaxe for stone and harder materials like Gold, Iron, Diamond etc.. You can make different tools out of different metals, like gold and you can also use cobblestone. The stronger the metal, higher the durability and lower the time to destroy the block.
You can stack blocks, and make anything. Mansions, Castles.. It is all about your creativity.Now, there are also monsters in Minecraft, which spawn in pitch black areas, in caves or during night. You can make torches and put them in places where you do not want them to spawn. Animals are attracted to light during night, and you can slay them to get leather, wool, and porkchops.

btw minecraft totally rocks, specially if you as a kid used to play a lot with legos.
